It’s been an interesting year for music in that there hasn’t been a lot going on thanks to COVID. That being said, some artists are still out there putting out new music (and not just Taylor Swift) despite everything, or doing live-stream concerts, or live Instagram feeds that strip down their music and interact with their fans. Some of those artists are on this list.
Here’s what I think are some of the best songs to come out this year. (Warning: most, if not all, are emo/pop punk/alt rock.) Also, these are in no particular order.
5. Infinitely Ordinary by the Wrecks
The Wrecks have quickly become one of my favorite bands. Their music always seems fresh, the lyrics very tongue-in-cheek. It’s music you can rock out to in the car. This song is a little more stripped down and raw that most of their music, but I like that about this song. It’s more real.
4. Real Love Song by Nothing But Thieves
Interestingly enough it was at a NBT show that I first discovered the Wrecks, who were their opener. Anyway, I digress. Another stripped down and raw kind of song. It’s about ends, and in some ways beginnings as well. The back track is powerful for as simple as it is. Connor Mason has a quality to his voice that I absolutely love.
3. Kiss Kiss by Machine Gun Kelly
I did not want to like this album. I honestly didn’t. It irritated me that someone like MGK felt that they could bring emo and pop-punk back into the mainstream. But damnit, I like the whole album. It’s catchy, and in a lot of ways it really is pop-punk. And I kind of hate and kind of love it all at the same time. This song definitely kicks, though.
2. Sine from Above by Lady Gaga and Elton John
Not many people know this, but I have loved Lady Gaga from the very beginning. It’s catchy, it’s fun. And she seems to be an incredible person (granted, I don’t spend much time reading celeb gossip articles, so for all I know she totally sucks). This song in particular irritated the hell out of me due to the spelling of sine (we’re not in a trig lesson, here), but the more I listened to it, the more that I love this song.
1. Can’t Go Home by the Juliana Theory
I have been a fan of this band since I was in high school – over 20 years now. They’ve broken my heart and broken up, only to tease a reunion tour, to cancel the tour because they’re “getting back together,” only to come out and say nope, sorry; not happening. But only two members of the original band have reformed the old group – of the other two one wants nothing to do with the music industry, and the other just isn’t all that interested in stepping back into his old life. I get it – they’ve moved on, started families, careers. I can’t fault them for not wanting it anymore. But these two… the song kicks. I wasn’t a big fan at first, but again, it’s grown on me. Rumor is there’s more music to come, that this was released as a kind of teaser, to see if the old fanbase was still there and if there was room to grow. I don’t care – it’s the Juliana Theory. I’m here for it.
All right, so that was the top 5 songs of the year. I honestly thought that this list would be harder to put together, but as it turns out, there was a lot of good music made this year.
Hope everyone enjoys their weekend! Stay safe, friends.
